Remembering Brendan Lackey

Lisa McIntyre Carter ('99) has sponsored a friend, Katie Carr, for an upcoming Marine Corp Marathon in the fall. Katie's team will be running and raising money for the Lymphoma and Lukemia Society. All of the money raised will go directly towards research for these diseases. Lisa has made a donation in Brendan Lackey's name and Katie has named him as an honorary teammate. Lisa says in an email, "I do not know [Paula and her family] but she is still a sister of mine and my heart goes out to them. God bless." You may want to check out Katie's marathon website.

Our sisters continue to amaze and inspire me!

And Maggie Mae Makes Seven...

Wonderful news from Denise Braswell Feagans and her family: Jeff, Denise, and their four boys, Garrett, Mitch, Gabe, and Nate are in the process of adopting a little girl from China. They began the journey in February and are documenting the process on their blog. Check out www.journeytomaggiemae.blogspot.com . The application is a long one, including much paperwork, several homestudies, and physicals and tests for the family, to name a few things they have to do.

Denise, we can't wait to hear more about this experience, especially when you and your daughter are finally brought together!

Sleepless Nights For These Sisters...

Wishing these families six consective hours of sleep...!

Rest In Peace, Brendan

It is with sorrow that I post this news to our blog. Brendan Lackey, son of Tom and Paula Geib Lackey, passed away on May 11th in the early afternoon. Brendan had lukemia. The following is a bit of an email that Tom sent:

[The morning of Brendan's passing] his Tae-Kwon Do school presented him with an Honorary 1st Degree Black Belt. He was so proud to receive it, he took it with him to clinic to show his primary doctor. He had the belt with him when he passed away. He had just arrived at the clinic and was with many people that love him very much. He was very calm, comfortable, and happy to be where he was when he died. It was almost as if he had written this ending.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to:

Growing Hope
PO Box 151
Fairfax Station, VA 22039

Tom and Paula's address is:

104 Oakcrest Manor Drive
Leesburg, VA 20176

Many thanks goes to Nicole Laningham Fountain for spearheading a fundraising campaign to raise some money for the Lackeys. Nikki, who is a Senior Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics, was able to send the family a check for $365! She sent the check and a card with the names of everyone who ordered Mary Kay products in Brendan's name.

Tom and Paula, Tara and Erin, our thoughts and prayers are with your family as you deal with the passing of your son and brother. Please know that your Kappa Delta sisters love you all very much!

KDs ROCKED The Reunion!!

Girls, WE ROCK! Yes, the Kappa Delta's were in the house at Longwood's 80's reunion!! AND WE LOOK GOOD! I think I speak for all who attended when I say it was so great to see everyone, all 40+ of us! It was like we had never really been apart. We definitely had the biggest turnout in comparison to the other sororities and fraternities, although the Delta's made a valiant effort (I think thanks to all of the KD's who came)!

A BIG thank you to Sister Brittany Berneski and her "crew" for welcoming us to the chapter room, providing cheesecake and lemonade, and pulling out all of their KD goodies--gotta love that the T-shirt dress is still around!! The chapter room looked great and all of you girls are gorgeous!

We noticed that there were no banners hanging out of the windows and when we asked the girls about this, they had no idea what we were talking about. Wendy Baer McMillian (CAB) said that the school does still allow the banners but that the ones they had just got too old and they were never replaced. Some of you have asked how we can thank the girls for their hospitality...a new banner would be a great idea! I am going to try and get a little crafty and make one for them!

If you aren't into making a banner but would still like to send the girls a thank you note, here's Kappa Delta's address:

Again, it was great, girls! Joyce Trent, thank you so much for coming, too! You were a HUGE part of the 80's KDs and we love you!

AOT EVERYBODY!!

Laura Davis Doudera Fundraiser a Success!

Kathleen Manning Holroyd has been tirelessly working to raise money for Laura Davis Doudera and her family to help offset the mounting bills related to Laura's fight against Stage IV Rectal Cancer. Kathleen spearheaded a cookbook fundraiser and is happy to let everyone know that the cookbooks are complete and will be mailed out anyday now. Please continue reading this post to get Kathleen's full update. By the way, many of you probably don't know this, but Kathleen doesn't even know Laura--they were not in school together. Kathleen, you are amazing and Laura, you are an inspiration in how you have been handling your illness! Continue to be strong.

From Kathleen:

A BIG thank you to everyone that helped with the cookbook fundraiser to help Laura Davis Doudera and her family as she battles cancer. I was so excited as the recipes came rolling in. You will all be amazed when you see this thing. Over 200 recipes and several beautiful pages of dedications for Laura from her husband and best friend, Susan. Thank you to all that purchased the cookbooks, too. They are arriving to my home on Monday (May 7) and I will be boxing and shipping them to you next week. Two hundred must be our magic number because we sold that many surpassing our goal of 100 by a mile! With 100% of the profits going straight to their family we were able to send them a check for $1407 !! I have had the good fortune to get to know Laura by email these past few months and I have to tell you that she is one of the most inspirational, loving people I have ever "met"! I am excited to finally meet her face to face soon and I hope that those of you who don't know her get the chance to as well. I adore and love each of you and wish to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping to make this so special! Be sure to check on Laura's progress at www.laurasfight.com and continue to pray for her full recovery!
